Mike Tagert of Starkville is the new Northern District Transportation Commissioner, after winning the Feb. 1 run-off over John Caldwell of Nesbit.
Tagert, a Republican, is currently president of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Council.
Caldwell carried Tunica County, 121-36, in a very light turn-out. The district-wide count was not available at press time on Wednesday.
Caldwell and Tagert finished one-two in a seven-man field on Jan. 11, but no one had a majority, forcing the run-off.
Caldwell carried just two counties in the district in January’s vote, DeSoto and Tate, demonstrating the growing strength of one of Mississippi’s fastest growing counties.
The election fills the post left vacant by the death of the incumbent commissioner, Bill Minor of Holly Springs. Tagert will join commissioners Dick Hall and Wayne Brown.
