The Tunica Academy track team proved themselves among Mississippi’s best at the MAIS State Track meet on May 1.
Earning honors were Maggie Gannaway, Claire Schubert, Crystal Terry, Sallie Perry, Jodeci Harvey, Austin Hagstrom, Stephen Gray, Freeman Gray, Caleb McCoy, and Perry Turner. The girls’ team took third overall, while the boys’ team finished in sixth place.
In individual competition, Gannaway took a first and second place for the Big Blue, completing the the 400 meter dash in 1:02.80 and the 200 meter dash in 27.43 seconds. She also took fourth place in the 100 meter dash. Freeman Gray took a second and a third place. Gray completed the 200 meter dash in 23.26 for second place and took third in long jump with a distance of 20-11.50. McCoy high jumped into fourth place, clearing 5’10”. He finished in eighth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 20.08. Schubert finished fifth in the 100 meter dash, running 13.66. She took sixth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.53.
The Devils’ relay teams also delivered top five finishes. The girls’ team of Perry, Schubert, Terry and Gannaway took fourth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:56.45. They also took fifth in the 400 Relay with a time of 55.01.
In boys’ relay action, the team of Harvey, Hagstrom, Grey and Grey posted a third place finish in the 800 relay. The team of Gray, McCoy, Gray and Perry Turner finished second in the mile relay with a time of 3:41.04.
The team was coached by Abbey Turner and Michelle Holmes.
Turner said that everyone had something to be proud of, citing Single A as a large division.
“A lot of people think single A is not important, but it’s one of the biggest groups out there,” Turner said. “There were 27 schools, and our girls placed third and our boys placed third overall.”
