Lions, Lady Lions take key wins into district play-offs

League wins last week and this week have the Rosa Fort Lions varsity squad in the driver’s seat as district play-offs get underway February 7 at Center Hill in DeSoto County.
Lion head coach Fred Steele is looking for a first-round bye in the tournament, which runs through Feb. 11.
Rosa Fort leads the league with 10 wins and no losses, followed by Center Hill at 6-4; Senatobia, 5-4; Byhalia, 5-5; North Panola, 3-5; Lafayette, 1-6; and Lewisburg, 1-7 (as of Feb. 1).

Two final games versus Lafayette and Byhalia close out the regular season.
On Jan. 27, Rosa Fort cruised to a 98-70 home win over Byhalia.
“Byhalia played us hard. They threw everything at us in the first quarter, but we went up by 10 right before the half, and then we came out pressing in the second half and pulled away,” Steele said.
Jan. 28’s game against Lewisburg was a blow-out win for the Lions, with a number of younger players getting time on the court. The final score was 85-48.
The Mustangs of Center Hill came to town on Feb. 1 looking to make a statement before hosting the district tournament. But the Lions ended that notion, winning 69-56 in a relatively low scoring game.
The Lady Lions trailed Center Hill in the final quarter but had a chance to win in the final minute. But two missed goals as the clock clicked down dashed their hopes, ending the game with a 44-46 loss.
Two wins out of three marked the last two weeks of play. The Lady Lions bested Senatobia on Jan. 18, 58-51, and Lewisburg on  Jan. 28, 76-25, but fell to Byhalia 60-50.
The Rosa Fort ladies are 15-8 overall and 6-3 in league play.
