Tunica Academy’s Jr. Blue Devils closed out their season this week at Lee Academy in Marianna, AR. The results of that contest will appear in the Oct. 8 issue of The Tunica Times.
The Jr. Blue won decisively over the same Lee team at home last Thursday, 26-6.
TA went up 6-0 on the first play of the game, when Donald Johnson brought down a Rip Kirk pass and dashed 75 yards into the endzone. The extra point try was no good.
The Jr. Blue struck again later in the quarter to go up 12-0, while holding the Cougars to a goose egg on the scoreboard.
But after the halftime break, Lee was back in the ballgame with a touchdown, making it TA 12 – Lee 6.
The Jr. Blue shut down any Cougar hopes in the fourth quarter, however, scoring a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion to seal the win.
Quarterback Rip Kirk was seven of 13 passing for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Kirk also connected with Daulton Holderfield for a two-point conversion.
Krik’s favorite target was Johnson, who had four catches for 138 yards, including the 75-yard TD. Arnoldo Ferretiz had a pair of receptions for 17 yards and one TD.
Kirk also led rushing with nine carries for 107 yards and one rushing TD. Evan Merryman had six carries for 17 yards and a touchdown, and Johnson had one rush for 38 yards.
The Jr. Blue Devils had 335 yards total on offense, exceptional on this level.
Coaches, however, gave a lot of credit for Thursday’s win to the defense.
The Jr. Blue is down to 13 on the roster, but coaches said several younger players are getting playing time and performing well.
Austin Goff led the TA defense with 12 tackles and a key interception near the end of the first half that shut down a Lee drive deep in Devil territory.
Jeffrey Horn also had an interception and made six tackles. Merryman tacked on five tackles.
The Jr. Blue’s season record stands at 2-3, with a chance to even it up in this week’s closer at Lee-Marianna.
