Smokeless tobacco not safer than cigarettes

Twenty-two-year-old Devan McFarland was 13 years old when he first tried snuff. By age 15 he was hooked. The terrible habit has stuck with him for years. He said his now daily habit started simply from hanging around friends that used dip for fun.

“My friends around me did,” said Mcfarland. “So I did it too.”

High school males and Caucasians are more likely to currently use smokeless tobacco than females and African Americans.  In 2016, 9,536 Mississippi public high school students were current users of smokeless tobacco.
