Now is the time to think about caring for the trees that we have already established, whether it be in our own yard or the street trees that are such a vital part of our environment.
Mulching
We mulch for many reasons but one of the most important is water conservation for the tree.  The mulch also keeps the base of the tree from being injured by weed eaters and other mechanical devices.  Mulch also reduces competition from other weeds and grasses.
The most effective mulching for all these functions is to  place mulch two to four inches deep and cover the entire root system of the tree.  This can be as far as two or three times the diameter of the branch spread of the tree.
