Extreme heat, drought usher in summer
The first day of summer–Monday, June 21–wasn’t farmer friendly, according to Nolen Canon of Tunica County.
Many Delta planters are already pulling out polypipe and cranking up overhead sprinklers, adding early expense to their bottom line.
“No crop likes this heat,” said Extension Agent Anthony Bland, who was heading out to the fields to check conditions on the longest day of the year.
“The heat is definitely taking a toll,” Bland continued. “We’re seeing corn that’s burning up.”
