September marks local, national milestones

Anniversaries abound this month–the sixth anniversary since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, the 20th anniversary of new ownership of this newspaper (see Page 2 for special 20th anniversary features), and the upcoming 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America.
On the morning of August 30, 2005, Katrina was storming ashore near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line, claiming over 1800 lives and causing $81 billion worth of damage. Katrina ultimately proved to be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

County coroner involved in car crash

A Tunica County official sustained minor injuries in an accident that left one man dead on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Coroner Glenn Grant was traveling on Old U.S. 304 when he struck another vehicle around 200 yards from Fogg Road in DeSoto County. The driver of the other vehicle, 53 year old Mike Burton of Sarah, was dead on the scene. Grant was treated and released from Baptist Hospital in Southaven.

Voters tap Anderson, Daley, Dupree in run-off

Turnout for Tuesday’s Democratic Primary run-off election on Aug. 23  was exceptionally large.
Approximately 2700 residents cast ballots to decide the winners in three races too close to declare in the Democratic Primary on Aug. 2. Top vote getters in the run-off advance to the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
In local races, Norma J. Anderson and Leigh Graves faced each other for the Tax Assessor/Collector’s seat. The position was vacated by Betty G. Fields in January. Ken Murphree has been acting as interim.
