Rise, fall of famed attorney captivates crowd


Author Curtis Wilkie shared the story behind the story revealed in his book The Fall of the House of Zeus to a large crowd on Friday, March 18 at the R.C. Irwin Library.
Wilkie told attendees that “Dick Scruggs was a friend of mine” who soon became the center of a federal investigation for bribery. The book details the events leading to Scruggs’ arrest and the aftermath and provides an indepth look at politics in the Magnolia State.
Wilkie said he wrote about the events as “accurately as he could” in order to allow the reader “to reach whatever conclusion they wish.”
“I had no ax to grind,” Wilkie said.

Board aims for May 1 redistricting submission


County supervisors will receive a proposed redistricting plan at their March 31 payroll meeting.
Board attorney Andy Dulaney said consultant Chris Watson had already met individually with supervisors to discuss 2010 census data released in late February.
The preliminary plan will be presented to the public in April and readied for a possible May 1 preclearance submission to the U.S. Department of Justice, after comments are received, considered and possibly incorporated into the county plan, Dulaney said.

Area man indicted


A Sarah, Miss. man faces federal charges of soliciting a minor “to engage in illicit sexual behavior,” according to U.S. Department of Justice.
Bruce Neil Lannet, 26, has been indicted following allegations that he used internet messaging  to violate Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422b. The law imposed federal implications on using specific mediums to approach minors for sexual purposes. The penalty is a minimum of 10 years in prison with a maximum of life in prison.

Celebrating Ellis Koonce


Longtime Main Street booster, businessman, Tourism Hall of Famer, and unofficial county historian Ellis Koonce Jr. was honored at a reception sponsored by Tunica Main Street on Sunday, March 13, at the Tunica Museum.
A former Tunica mayor, alderman, judge, town clerk, and interim sheriff, Koonce is a founding member of the Tunica Museum Board of Directors and the county Tourism Commission.
