Tuesday’s primary races drawing interest
Next Tuesday’s Democratic primary election will decide a number of county offices, including Sheriff, Chancery Clerk, Circuit Clerk, Tax Assessor/Collector, both Justice Court posts, and District 1 Supervisor, but will leave other races up in the air until the November general election.
New musician mini, but mighty
His dreams may be bigger than his body right now, but one local isn’t letting that stop him.
Eight year old Kendarius Laird of Tunica is starting a promising career in music with his rap single “Yeen Heard Bout Me.” Under the stage name “Lil Sipp Shawty”, Laird raps about what he knows including making money for ice cream, being out of school for the summer and staying out of trouble.
County paves way for GTA
Following a lengthy executive session on July 15, Board of Supervisors attorney Andy Dulaney said Tunica County would play a role in the funding for GreenTech Automotive.
The company, whose headquarters are located in Tunica, plans to make and distribute hybrid and electric cars. They will build the first products at a facility in DeSoto County, with plans to relocate to Tunica County in 2012.
Chance vaults Tunica’s Ward into gymnastics
Not everyone’s dream falls in his or her lap, but every now and then someone gets an opportunity of a lifetime that just doesn’t happen twice. For native Tunican Janis Ward, that golden opportunity came by way of a grandparent hard-pressed for time.
Ward was born in Tunica and graduated from what was then Tunica Institute of Learning, before moving to Houston.
In the summer of 1984, after the deaths of both grandparents just days apart, Ward and her family were really down. She remembers turning on the television in the weeks to come and distracting herself with the Olympics.
“I had never really watched the Olympics,” Ward claims, “but I watched Mary Lou Retton hit a perfect vault twice and fell in love with the sport.” Although she had never stepped foot on a gymnastic floor or strapped on a leotard, Ward began craving gymnastics like a starving man wants a steak.
