Board adds to personnel


Mark Hudson will join the staff of Tunica Arena, following an executive session decision by the Board of Supervisors on March 28.
According to board minutes, District 5 Supervisor McKinley Daley made the motion to hire Hudson as Assistant Director of the Arena.  
Hudson is a resident of Tunica County. He serves as the Tunica County coordinator for Congressman Bennie Thompson, is the CEO/President of O’Hara Medical Supplies and Equipment and is a former facilitator/instructor for the Tunica County Community Development Coalition.

Arena’s impact on local economy is huge


The Tunica Arena’s 12th anniversary is shaping up to be a banner year, with 12 new events booked, including a trio of world events in the line-up.
Arena director Steve Sosebee said he and staffers Rebecca Fyfe and Leigh Watson have hit the road and the airwaves to attract new bookings. Arena staff also work closely with the Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau. Now, the schedule is full on all but four weekends in 2013, Sosebee said.
For the first quarter, arena events have made an estimated $2.5 million impact on the local economy, Sosebee said last week at Tunica Rotary, on track to match Fiscal Year 2012’s $10 million total impact. The arena is bringing visitors to Tunica casinos, filling hotel rooms and restaurants, and adding to the bottom line at local gas stations and grocery stores, Sosebee said.

Rivergate Festival organizers embracing stormy past


Rain and wind, thunder and lightning may have spoiled some festivals past, but this year, organizers are “going with the flow” and incorporating spring’s unpredictable weather into the 21st annual Rivergate Festival April 18-20.
“We’ve just decided to use the weather to our advantage,” Chamber CEO Lyn Arnold said. “We may even have to manufacture some raindrops if it’s sunny.”
Festival posters and advertising feature an outsize pair of rain boots decorated with symbols of all the things that make Rivergate fun: music, crawfish, barbecue, cars, bikes, and even a nod to an arena equine event that has coincided with the festival weekend for 10 years.
