Cotton, Mitchell win posts

New District 2 school board member Tomaka Henderson Cotton will take office in January 2011, after unseating incumbent Lawyer Porter Jr. in the November 2, general election.
Cotton joins three members who were not up for re-election this year, Barbara Conway, Larry Braziel, and Rev David Anderson, and Marilyn McKay-Young, who ran unopposed in District 1.

Races must unite for success of Delta

Butch Scipper says racial reconciliation is one of his top priorities.
As chancery clerk for almost 20 years, Scipper has worked to mend the damage from segregation by helping blacks and whites reach a common goal of improving the Delta. But for it to be successful, he says, they have to continue to do it together.
“We have great race relations here in Quitman County and have for years,” Scipper said. “I think it’s because people as a whole here have always, to some degree, accepted that everybody lives here together.”

Board covers conditions at sub, Arena changes

In two meetings, the board of supervisors has appointed a new department head, leased a building to a manufacturing company, discussed the revitalization of a residential development and all things in between.
On Friday, Oct. 29, the board received the resignation of Paul Battle Arena and Expo Center head Peck Buichillion. His retirement was effective Oct. 31, 2010. Supervisors entered into executive session and announced Steve Sosebee as the new director for the facility.
On Monday, Nov. 1, the board kicked off their meeting with an executive session after the minutes from the previous month were read. Board attorney Andy Dulaney announced that no action was taken during executive session.
