Entergy Mississippi, Inc. is sending a message to its customers that could put money in their pockets and millions of dollars into the state’s economy.
The company is sponsoring Voluntary Income Tax Assistance centers throughout its 45-county service area to provide free tax preparation help and to promote the Earned Income Tax Credit to potentially eligible residential customers. Customers who earn $49,000 a year or less may qualify for free tax preparation assistance and tax credits from the Internal Revenue Service. To find the assistance site nearest you, call 800-906-9887 or go to www.irs.gov.
“It’s part of Entergy Mississippi’s efforts to help our low-income customers,” said Gloria Johnson, director of customer service for Entergy Mississippi, Inc.
Entergy Mississippi’s efforts complement the IRS campaign to educate taxpayers about the EITC and requirements to claim the credit. Along with sponsoring the VITA centers, the company is mailing bill inserts about EITC to customers who receive paper bills, placing outbound calls to select customers and including messages about the credit on My Account Online and on paper bills.
“Although last year, the average credit in Mississippi was $2,604, working families can receive up to $5,666 if they qualify,” said Johnson. “That can make a huge difference in a family’s life, and can make a big impact on Mississippi’s economy as well.”
The EITC is a federal income tax credit for low-income workers who are eligible for and claim the credit. Taxpayers who qualify for and claim the credit can reduce the amount of tax they owe, pay no tax or get a refund. Research by the IRS indicates that nearly one-quarter of households who are entitled to the credit do not claim it.
