Blue Devils get mixed results

With the close of the regular season ahead, Tunica Academy squeezed in three games in four days’ time.
The Devils faced Lee Marianna on Jan. 14, Strayhorn on Jan. 15 and Marshall on Jan. 18. They will meet Marvell on the road today (Friday) and face conference challengers DeSoto and Delta next week.
On Jan. 14, the Jr. Lady Blue Devils and the Varsity Blue Devils conquered the squads from Lee Marianna.

The Jr. Lady Devils started the night off with a 32-20 win over the young Cougars. Tunica took an early lead, standing ahead 19-9 at the half. They were up 28-16 by the end of the third quarter. They brought the win home by adding for more points in the fourth.
Crystal Terry led scoring with 19, followed by Ellen Graves, Sallie Perry and Bailey Bounds with four each.
The Blue Devils dealt Lee a 72-56 loss after a tight first and second quarter. At the half, Tunica trailed 29-31. The Big Blue went on a scoring spree in the third, adding 22 points. They held Lee to 11. Tunica finished off their challenger in the fourth, posting 21 to Lee’s 13.
Caleb McCoy led scoring with 31 points. Tyler Billingsley followed with 13. Sam McGee put up 12. Stephen Gray had eight. Brandon Holmes had six. Taylor Hagstrom rounded out scoring with two.
The Jr. Blue Devils and the Lady Devils fought hard but the Cougars overpowered them.
Donald Johnson was the leading scorer for the Jr. Blue Devils with 22 points. Rip Kirk followed with eight. Garland Melton had six. Arnaldo Ferretiz had two and Grayson Brown had one.
For the Lady Devils, Caitlin Brown led scoring with 19. Terry and Graves had two. Sam Melton, Claire Schubert and Perry put up one each.
Against Strayhorn, the Blue Devils were the sole winners. They defeated the Tate County opponent 51-27, after leading 38-16 at the half.
McCoy posted 20. McGee had 11. Holmes chipped in seven. Billingsley had five. Chris Manues and Gray had four each.
The Jr. Lady Devils’ top scorer in the loss to Strayhorn was Abigail Barnett with four. Jordan Spencer and Carley Hicks put up two each. Amber McCormick had one.
Leading the score board for Tunica’s Sr. Lady Devils against Strayhorn was Brown with 13. Terry posted nine. Schubert had two.
Arnaldo Ferretiz was the top scorer for the Jr. Blue Devils with 13. Jeffrey Horn had eight. Brown posted two.
In Tunica’s most recent set of match-ups, they faced Marshall Academy at home last Tuesday. The Jr. Lady Devils were the only Big Blue team to deliver a win. They defeated the Patriots 37-31. By half time, Tunica led 18-12. They added 11 to their score in the third and held Marshall to eight points. In the fourth, the girls in blue added eight. Marshall posted 11.
Terry led scoring with 14. Hayley Holmes and Perry followed with seven each. Graves and Bounds posted four. Spencer put up one.
Despite posting 36 points for the night, Jr. Devil Johnson and his young team came up short against Marshall. Melton and Kirk added eight. Ferretiz posted five. Austin Goff had two.
The Lady Blue Devils also fell to Marshall. Brown had 13 and Terry had six.
Marshall also set their sights on the Sr. Blue Devils and won. McCoy led totals with 20. Billingsley had 14. Holmes had seven. McGee, Manues and Gray each posted two.
Following the two conference games next week, the junior high district tournament will begin. Delta Academy is hosting, according to Tunica Academy Athletic Director Abbey Turner. Turner said the Jr. Girls will likely be second or third in the conference headed into the tournament.
