In mid January, President Barack Obama issued over 20 executive orders related to gun control on the federal level. On Thursday, Jan. 24, Sheriff K.C. Hamp, the chief law enforcement officer for Tunica County, discussed the new protocol and its implications on citizens in this community.
“I support the U.S. Constitution and the Second Amendment giving citizens the right to bear arms,” Hamp said. “I echo the ban of law enforcement around the nation of keeping high power assault weapons out of the hands of gangs, terrorists and the mentally challenged.”
Hamp said an assault weapon, also commonly known as a machine gun, belongs in the hands of law enforcement officers and the military. Weapons that have the capacity to fire many rounds and “hurt a lot of people” should not fall into the hands of just anyone, he said.
