Electric bills shock locals

After surviving some of the region’s coldest temperatures in years, several tenants of Buck Island Bayou Mobile Home Park in Robinsonville were upset by recent electric bills from Coahoma Electric Power Association.

“It was high,” Gloria Hunter said.  “It’s too high, and we’re trying to find a way to get some kind of help to pay it.”

Though the temperatures were freezing, Hunter said she and her family had taken extra precautions to conserve energy during the extremely cold weather.  Still, their most recent electric bill was $703, which is more than double their average bill, she said.

Hunter, who shares a three bedroom mobile home with three other family members, said she doesn’t believe the bill increase is an accurate reflection of her household’s electric usage.

Two applications underway for local charter schools

Part two of a series

Dr. Willie Herenton said he revised his original letter of intent, which was to serve 100 students, all admitted at once, in grades K-5 from the year 2015 to 2020, after discovering legislation that might allow students to attend public charter schools beyond their district of residence.

Though that legislation has not passed to date, Herenton said he is setting up his proposed charter school in such a way that it can accommodate students from other districts if that legislation is enacted in the future.
