Taylors take on fight of their lives together
The Taylors are a most unique couple, unique in the fact that they both have had cancer, twice. Anne was the first to succumb with breast cancer in 1987. Back then there was no chemotherapy. The doctor did radical surgery and hoped for the best. Any type of cancer then was considered a death sentence. Luckily, Anne’s prognosis was the best. She stayed cancer free for 10 years.
Then in 1997, she discovered that she had Stage 4 cancer in the fluid around her lungs. It was inoperable, and it was terminal. She felt numb, and she never wants to see that “look” on Warren’s face again.
Church mourns couple
The death of a local church parishioner is still under investigation by authorities in DeSoto County.
Alex Ward was discovered dead in his home by neighbors on Saturday, Aug. 14. Investigators have stated that Ward was doused in an accelerant such as kerosene or gasoline and preliminary autopsy reports have indicated he died from smoke inhalation and thermal burns. He was found unresponsive in a bathtub inside his home in the Delta Bluff subdivision in Walls, Miss.
Ballot includes local posts
The qualifying deadline for two Board of Education positions is Friday, September 3, by 5 p.m.
The District 1 and District 2 seats will be on the November 2 ballot. Incumbent school board members from those districts are Marilyn Young, District 1, and Lawyer Porter Jr., District 2.
Nonprofit seeks support for youth program
The head of a local nonprofit appeared before the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on Aug. 17 seeking help with an effort to receive a federal grant.
James Dunn, representing the Tunica County Community Development Coalition, said his organization recently applied for a grant from the Department of Planning and Safety.
“In order to make the application, we need an organization to agree to sponsor it,” Dunn said.
The grant would cover costs for a Youth Entrepreneurship program that exposes kids to writing a business plan and running a business, Dunn said. The program features guest speakers and hands on experience. It operates on a part-time basis.
