Local health organization wins prestigious grant
Tunica 10 Point Coalition, Inc. was presented a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, through the Community Foundation’s Regional Health Council, a component of the Get A Life! program to prevent childhood obesity. The Coalition was one of seven organizations receiving a grant this year.
Tunica 10 Point Coalition, Inc. will continue its work through its Combating Obesity Intervention Program (COIP). In the past year, the organization has worked with the entire county and the faith-based community to provide health awareness. During its first year, 130 people participated, and coalition organizers hope to draw even more into the program during its second year.
Better Business Bureau warns about vulnerability to scams
Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging all consumers and businesses to pay close attention to a Cyber Security Advisory issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 browser (IE8) that could allow scammers to access and take over users’ computers.
The risk for all users – home, business and government – is high, and BBB is urging anyone with IE8 to follow the recommended steps to address the problem.
‘The house that Coach Kirkland built’
Retired basketball coach extraordinaire Gerone Kirkland, his wife Annie and many family members entered the Rosa Fort High School gymnasium to thunderous applause from a large crowd gathered to honor one of Mississippi’s best, as the facility was renamed the Gerone Kirkland Gymnasium Building last Saturday.
Coach Kirkland, with over 800 wins in his career, has one of the best coaching records in the state. He worked in Tunica County at RFHS from 1969 to 1997, retiring as athletic director and varsity basketball coach and taught P.E., Driver’s Education and Mississippi history during his tenure.
