Town nixes sale of land for ‘safe room’

The Town of Tunica took action on a county request for almost seven acres of land for use by the FEMA Safe Room 361 program.

In executive session, aldermen unanimously voted not to donate or sell the land, located between Old U.S. 61 and new 61 north of the city limits. The matter was considered in executive session as part of the “real estate” exception to open meetings laws.

County awards blues museum contract

Contractor Barnes and Brower was tapped for the $1.6 million Gatesway to the Blues project last week, after supervisors agreed to amend a memorandum of understanding with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to accept an additional $200,000 from that state agency.

Tunica’s sons and daughters have served honorably in the armed forces through various conflicts. This week with Veterans Day coming up, we especially remember Tunica’s most recent casualty of war, William Brandon Dawson, and three airmen from the past, all of whom died fighting for their country.

Be There With Bells On

Tunica Main Street and the Tunica County Chamber of Commerce kick off the annual $1,000 holiday shopping spree with a Christmas Open House on Thursday, November 14.

Fifteen local small businesses have signed on to participate, an expansion from previous years. The event will now include businesses along Highway 61, as well as those downtown that have participated in years past.
