Court posts on next week’s ballot
With only one local office contested on next Tuesday’s ballot, Tunica voters may be tempted to stay home from the polls.
But important judgeships, including two contested races, and a special election to fill the unexpired term of retired district attorney Laurence Mellen will be decided next week.
Jimmy L. Miller and W.M Sanders are vying for a new Chancery Court post in District 7-2, which includes Tunica County.
Events boost local economy
In terms of economic impact, the Paul Battle Arena and Expo Center is proving itself to be the facility that can accomplish big things.
Arena officials recently issued a report putting numbers on paper as far as what the shows they host bring to Tunica County. From Oct. 2009 to Sept. 2010, events at the arena made an economic impact of $25 million.
Arena events coordinator Rebecca Fyfe said the final figure was derived after using a formula from the American Quarter Horse Association.
CVB team living out travels in Tunica
With some creativity and the help of modern technology, three girls are showing and telling the world about Tunica.
Travel Tunica, a trio composed of Chrissy Garner, Claire Hick and Lisa Konupka of the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau, have been living local adventures since February 2010. Hick explains that Travel Tunica was born from a discussion about the e-newsletter.
“The idea came about because I needed new, fresh content for the e-newsletter that currently goes out to over 100,000 people, mostly in drive markets close to Tunica where we’ve advertised in the past,” Hick said. “I remember Lisa saying it would be fun to actually experience what our visitors could do in Tunica and tell potential visitors about our adventures. Travel Tunica is what kick- started our blog at http://downtheroad.tunicatravel.com.”
