Tunica County moves up in health rankings
According to the fourth annual County Health Rankings released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, DeSoto County has the healthiest residents in Mississippi, while Quitman County residents are the least healthy in the state.
Tunica County ranked at 70 of 81 counties which received ratings. In 2012, the county was rated 80 of 82 counties considered and 72 in 2011.
Unemployment rate looms at 20 percent mark
The Mississippi Department of Employment Security announced that more people held jobs in February 2013 than in January 2013. According to preliminary numbers, employers reported 5,500 more jobs in February 2013, which is an increase of 17,000 from February 2012.
Locally, Tunica County posted an unadjusted unemployment rate of 20.1, putting it over 20 percent for the second consecutive month. Adjusted figures for January listed the unemployment rate at 17.5 percent.
Lyn Arnold, president and chief executive officer of the Tunica County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Foundation, said that winter months in Tunica County have historically been slower for the local job market.
Town election draws four
Following the qualifying deadline on March 8, citizens will decide races in two town wards. Town clerk Celia Boren said there will be no race for mayor as incumbent Chuck Cariker was the only candidate to submit paperwork.
